Acupuncture can be used to relieve chronic nonpulsatile tinnitus

Chronic non-pulsatile tinnitus can be very aggravating to sufferers, but no effective treatment for it exists. In a study published in Caspian Journal of Internal Medicine, researchers investigate the potential of acupuncture as a treatment for tinnitus.

  • The researchers conducted a randomized double-blind clinical trial from December 2014 to September 2015.
  • The study involved patients suffering from chronic non-pulsatile tinnitus. The participants were randomly divided into two groups: the treatment group (composed of 26 males and 18 females) and the control group (composed of 27 males and 17 females).
  • The treatment group was treated over 15 sessions. At the end of the last session and three weeks after the end of the treatment, the participants were told to complete two questionnaires: a visual analog scale (VAS) for tinnitus loudness and a tinnitus severity index (TSI).
  • The researchers noted significant changes in terms of TSI and VAS in both groups, but the treatment group showed lower scores than the placebo group.

The researchers concluded that acupuncture can reduce the loudness and severity of chronic non-pulsatile tinnitus.
